The morning after Diwali
The diyas looked beautiful. Now there are oil rings on the floor, candle wax by the door and a sticky trail on the balcony. Don't worry: almost all of it comes off, as long as you deal with wax and oil in the right order and don't reach for harsh chemicals.
The golden rule: remove as much as you can dry first, then clean what's left. Water poured onto fresh oil just spreads it further.
How to remove candle and diya wax
- Let it harden completely. Soft wax smears. If you're in a hurry, hold an ice cube in a plastic bag on the wax for a minute.
- Lift it with a plastic scraper. An old credit card or plastic spatula works well. Never use a knife or steel scraper on tiles, marble or wood.
- Deal with the thin film left behind. Warm it gently with a hairdryer and blot with a paper towel or cotton cloth until no more wax transfers.
- Mop the area with warm water and floor cleaner to remove the last greasy layer.
How to remove diya oil and ghee
- Blot fresh spills straight away with newspaper or a paper towel. Press, don't rub.
- Sprinkle an absorbent powder. Besan (gram flour), cornflour, talcum powder or baking soda all work. Cover the spot generously.
- Leave it for 30 minutes to a few hours. The powder pulls oil out of the surface. For older stains, leave it overnight.
- Sweep up the powder and repeat if the spot still looks dark.
- Clean with warm water and a degreasing cleaner. A little dishwash liquid on the spot, followed by a mop with floor cleaner, removes the remaining film.
- Dry the floor so no one slips.
Floor-by-floor tips
| Floor type | What to do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Vitrified and ceramic tiles | Powder method, then warm water with floor cleaner. Easiest floors to clean. | Steel scrubbers that scratch the glaze |
| Marble | Act fast; marble is porous and absorbs oil. Use a thick besan-and-water paste, cover overnight, then wipe off and rinse. | Lemon, vinegar and acid-based cleaners, which etch marble. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first. |
| Granite and Kota stone | Powder method, then a mild cleaner and plenty of rinsing. | Leaving oil overnight without absorbent powder |
| Wooden and laminate | Blot, use powder, then a barely damp cloth. Dry immediately. | Hairdryer heat on laminate; soaking with water |
| Outdoor balcony and steps | Powder, then scrub with a stiff brush and warm water with floor cleaner. | Washing oil straight into plants and drains |
A gentler floor clean after the festival
After days of guests, sweets and diyas, your floors need a proper mop, often more than once. Ecoroot's Bioenzyme Floor Cleaner is made from citrus peels we ferment for 90 days in our in-house factory, combined with coconut-derived surfactants. It helps lift the greasy film diya oil leaves behind, without phosphates, chlorine, bleach or synthetic dyes. Dilute it as directed on the label.
Next year: prevent the mess
- Place diyas on a steel plate, brass tray or banana leaf instead of directly on the floor.
- Don't overfill diyas; oil spills over as the wick burns.
- Keep candles in holders or glass cups.
- Lay a cloth or newspaper under diyas on marble or wooden floors.
Frequently asked questions
Will the oil stain on my marble ever come out?
Fresh stains usually lift with one or two rounds of besan paste. Old, set-in stains can take several overnight treatments. Very deep stains may need a stone-care professional.
Can I use hot water directly on wax?
It melts the wax but spreads it further and can push it into grout. Harden and scrape first.
How do I get wax out of grout lines?
Scrape what you can, warm the rest gently with a hairdryer and blot, then scrub the grout with a soft brush and floor cleaner.
What about wax on rugs or doormats?
Harden and break off the wax, then place a paper towel over the spot and press with a warm (not hot) iron so the wax melts into the paper. Wash the rug afterwards.
